Comeback Boomers Shock Washington

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - For the second consecutive game, the Schaumburg Boomers found themselves in an early deficit at home against the Washington Wild Things. And for the second straight night, the Boomers rallied in exciting fashion to steal a 6-5 victory.

Trouble started in the third inning when the Wild Things strung together a couple hits and took a 2-0 lead. However, Schaumburg responded in the bottom of the frame with a run of its own. Mike Valadez sent a scorcher toward the left field corner for a double and Craig Hertler came up and knocked him in to close the gap at 2-1.

Trailing 3-1 three innings later, Hertler earned back another run when he scored from third on a wild pitch. The ball was flying off Boomer bats all night long, but the offense had trouble reaching base.

Until the eighth inning Schaumburg had posted just three hits in the contest before Chad Mozingo poked a two-out single to drive in Hertler and bring the Boomers to within a run at 4-3. Brian McConkey then handed Schaumburg the lead with a sensational two-run triple to right and Sean Mahley added insurance with an RBI single to make it 6-4 in favor of the Boomers. All four runs came with two outs.

Dexter Price earned the win in relief with James Jones holding off Washington by posting a strikeout with the tying run at third in the ninth to save the game for the Boomers 6-5. Cody Griebling worked six innings with five strikeouts in a no decision on the mound for Schaumburg.

Hertler finished 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Mozingo continued his domination of Washington with a hit, a run, and an RBI. This came after the left fielder posted eight RBI in his last seven games against the Wild Things, including three on Friday.

The 3-0 start matches the clubs mark to begin the 2012 season. The Boomers are back in action to try and make it 4-0 on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against Washington to close out the homestand.
