Schaumburg Sweeps Opening Homestand

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Schaumburg Boomers broke out the brooms in a 2-1 Sunday afternoon showdown against the Washington Wild Things. After back-to-back come-from-behind victories in the first two games of the series, the Boomers pitching staff held on to a one-run lead as Schaumburg improved to 4-0.

Frank Pfister broke open the scoring in third inning, plating Ty Nelson with an RBI single to put the Boomers on top 1-0.

Washington answered with a run of its own one inning later on back-to-back doubles by Jovan Rosa and Mark Samuelson. Joe Parsons was able to strand Samuelson in scoring position and turned in an exceptional performance in his first professional start. After spending last season in the bullpen, Parsons scattered six hits and earned the first decision of the year for a Boomers starting pitcher.

After the pair gave the Boomers an early lead, Pfister and Nelson also combined on defense to save a third inning run. With a speedy Darian Sandford on third in the third, Pfister made a nice pick on the short hop and came home with the throw as catcher Ty Nelson absorbed the collision and applied the tag to keep the game tied.

That run proved to be the difference and allowed the Boomers to take control bottom of the frame, when Gerard Hall doubled home Craig Hertler to go up 2-1. Hertler flashed his quick feet on the bases with a steal after a walk to move into scoring position.

Matt Kuna came in and shut down the Wild Things, tossing two and one-third innings of scoreless ball with two punchouts against just one hit. That bridged gap to Jose Rodriguez, who came in for two outs. James Bierlein capped the Boomers excellent effort on the mound by slamming the door in the ninth to earn the save and complete a 4-0 start to the season.

As a group, the Boomers hurlers tossed nine strikeouts on the day, lifting the team's league-leading total to 38 through the season’s first four games. Craig Hertler tallied two more hits and scored the decisive run, adding to his sizzling start to the season and earning the infielder 105.5 Star of the Game honors.

"It feels great." Hertler said during the on-field interview. "We're clicking on all cylinders right now; pitchers are pitching well, we're coming up with timely hits and playing great defense. It's good to see early in the season."

The Boomers have two well-earned days off on Monday and Tuesday before heading to Kentucky to face the Florence Freedom. Schaumburg's next home game is Tuesday, May 28 against the Normal CornBelters, and Boomers Stadium is offering a special Kid's Eat Free Tuesday deal in the first of a six-game homestand!
