Boomers Split Road Doubleheader in Florence

FLORENCE, Ky. — Playing on the road for the first time this season, the Schaumburg Boomers split a scheduled doubleheader with the Florence Freedom, dropping game one 2-0 and winning game two 2-1.

The Boomers could not solve Florence starter Dan Jensen in the first contest. Just two runners reached scoring position in the game as Jensen struck out six in the shutout. Gerard Hall posted two of the five total hits for the Boomers. Florence won the game with single runs in the first and second, scoring in the first without a hit. Mike Giovenco suffered the loss despite allowing just two hits. Giovenco fanned six in five innings.

The second game was nearly identical to the first but opposite. Frank Pfister homered in the first inning to hand the Boomers a 1-0 lead. The homer was the first of the season for the Boomers. Schaumburg extended the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single from Chad Mozingo in the sixth. Florence struck for a run in the seventh but stranded the tying run in scoring position as James Bierlein earned the save. Matt Kuna picked up his second win in relief with two scoreless frames. Chris Phelan made the spot start for the Boomers and pitched three innings.

The rubber match of the series is at 5:35 p.m. on Thursday. The Boomers (5-1) will send LHP Danny Jimenez (0-0, 3.00) opposite LHP Brent Choban (0-0, 1.80).
