Grand Slam Lifts Boomers to Extra-Inning Win

SAUGET, Ill. — Brian McConkey connected on his first homer as a Schaumburg Boomer, a grand slam with two outs in the top of the 11th inning, to finally allow the Boomers to put away the Gateway Grizzlies 13-9 on Sunday night.

McConkey’s blast finished off a night which saw Schaumburg fail to hold three leads including two in the late innings. Gerard Hall drove home five runs as the Boomers raced to a 6-2 lead through seven innings. Hall connected on a two-run homer and a two-run double in the game, matching a team record with five RBIs. Gateway scored four times in the eighth inning to tie the score before the Boomers plated three in the ninth to go ahead 9-6. Jet Butler’s three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth tied the game and sent it to extras, setting the stage for McConkey’s heroics. McConkey had been 0-for-5 before the blast, just the second slam in franchise history.

Dan Lazzaroni, the sixth pitcher of the night, earned the win but not without more drama as Gateway brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the inning. Mike Giovenco started and tossed five innings, leaving with the lead after allowing just one run. The Boomers totaled 11 hits, a season high. Hall collected three while Chad Mozingo and Mike Valadez posted two apiece.

Schaumburg is off on Monday before returning to Boomers Stadium on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. to open a six-game homestand against the Normal CornBelters. LHP Danny Jimenez (0-1, 4.91) starts for the Boomers against RHP Luis Noel (0-0, 3.60) on a You Choose Tuesday and Kids Eat Free night.
