McQuail Walk-Off Lifts Boomers in Extras

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Steve McQuail belted the first walk-off homer in franchise history in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the Schaumburg Boomers to a 6-4 win over the Normal CornBelters on a wet Tuesday. 

McQuail’s homer was his second of the season and came on a 1-2 offering from reliever Mitch Mormann. Also along for the ride was Chad Mozingo, who led off the inning in front of McQuail with a single. McQuail finished the game with three hits, including a pair of doubles. The game was halted for 1:39 due to rain after the fifth with Normal leading 4-3. Schaumburg rallied from down 2-0 to take a 3-2 lead on the first professional hit fromBobby Martin, a two-run single, in the bottom of the fourth. Normal responded with two runs in the fifth to lead 4-3 before the delay. Brian McConkey was able to tie the game with a two-out double in the eighth.

Chris Phelan earned the win in relief with three innings of work. Danny Jimenez started and struck out seven in five innings. The Boomers struck out 14 in the game, a new franchise record, bettering the mark set on May 17. McConkey and Michael Valadez posted two hits each.

It’s a quick turnaround for the Boomers and CornBelters, who meet again at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday in a Kids Day Game. RHP Cody Griebling (0-1, 5.40) starts for the Boomers opposite RHP Tyler Lavigne (1-1, 3.27).
