Boomers Blowout 'Belters on Kids Day

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - In front of Kids Day Matinee crowd, the Schaumburg Boomers won their second straight game over the Normal CornBelters on Wednesday by a final score of 12-5. After falling behind early, Schaumburg quickly came back and set the tone for the rest of the game.

Less than 12 hours after the Boomers and Belters 11-inning thriller ended early Wednesday morning, the teams trotted onto the field for their Wednesday matchup. Going into the day, three of the Boomers seven victories on the season came via the comeback.

Cody Griebling flirted with danger pitching in the first for the Boomers, giving up two runs in the first three batters. The right-hander fought through, picking off a runner at second base on an inside move to limit the damage and keep the score 2-0. After six strong innings, Griebling earned the win after a strong six innings, striking out five and allowing just three runs on six hits.

The Boomers capitalized on two CornBelter errors in the second inning, tallying three runs to put the home team on top for good. CornBelters pitcher Tyler Lavigne hit a batter, walked another, and a pair of errors on Boomers bunts led to Steve McQuail, Brian McConkey, and Michael Demperio crossing the plate.

McConkey added a sac fly in the third to put the Boomers on top 4-2 before the CornBelters fought back and scored one in the fourth. That’s as close as Normal would get as McQuail made a diving stop on the first base line to end the inning. The Boomers offense answered in the bottom of the frame with two runs on a Frank Pfister double, one of his two on the day.

Boomers batters scored a run in every inning except two on Wednesday afternoon and at one point pushed across a run in six consecutive innings to complete the game with 12 runs on 11 hits. Schaumburg also took advantage of 10 free passes on the day, drawing seven walks and three hit batters.

Pfister set the pace for the home team, notching three hits, two doubles, and a pair of RBI en route to being named the Star 105.5 FM Star of the Game. Mahley had a monster day as well with two hits, two runs scored, and two runs batted in. McQuail registered a hit and scored three times, and Craig Hertler pitched in with a hit and two RBI.

Delvin Perez and Dan Lazzaroni combined to finish the game for the Boomers and preserve the win. The victory gave Schaumburg its league-leading eighth win on the season, complementing the Boomers Frontier League high 68 runs.

The Boomers and CornBelters are back at it on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. for our St. Patrick's Day Celebration.
