Schaumburg Splits First-Ever Home Doubleheader

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - Coming off the first home rainout in franchise history, the Schaumburg Boomers split the first home doubleheader in franchise history, walking off with a 2-1 eight-inning win in game two against the Evansville Otters following a 7-0 loss in the opener.

GAME ONE RECAP

Evansville broke open the scoring in the third inning of game one, taking advantage of a hit batter and one of four walks on the day. The Otters pair of runs in the third would prove enough to take the victory. Evansville added four runs worth of insurance during the next two innings in the form of two hits, two walks, an error, and a homerun.

Schaumburg stayed hitless in game one until the fifth inning, when Craig Hertler snuck a single past the infield to break up Ryan Zamorsky's no-hitter. Gerard Hall and Ty Nelson would each add one base knock to round out the attack. Nelson's double in the seventh was the Boomers 34th two-bagger of the year, which is good enough for the league's best mark.

Danny Jimenez took the loss for Schaumburg, while Delvin Perez pitched a scoreless sixth and James Bierlein allowed a run on two hits in the seventh.

GAME TWO RECAP

The Boomers shut down a potent Otters offensive attack in the second half of the first doubleheader in Boomers Stadium history, snapping the visiting team’s six-game winning streak. Chris Phelan went five strong innings, giving up just one run on two hits, paving way for a 2-1 Schaumburg victory.

Hall ended an Otters threat in the first inning of game two by snagging a scorcher out of the air and tagging Evansville's baserunner out in one swift motion. Hertler added another dynamic defensive play two innings later, sprinting to grab a line drive in center to help keep the Otters scoreless through the first five innings.

Hertler then took off the glove and contributed on offense in the bottom of the third, reaching first base on a bunt single before becoming the Boomers first run. The centerfielder stole second base and reached third on an Evansville throwing error, eventually scoring by sliding to home plate around the catcher on a Frank Pfister sacrifice fly.

After more dominant pitching late in the game, including another solid inning of relief by Boomers outfielder turned reliever Sean Mahley, the scheduled seven-inning game went into an extra eighth frame. Dexter Price retired the side in order to set up the dramatic finish in the eighth.

Pfister drew a base on balls to begin the eighth and reached third on a wild pitch and a fielder’s choice. Then Steve McQuail sent a sac fly to left field that was just deep enough to plate Pfisterd and bring the Boomers their third walk-off win along with him.

Price earned his second victory of the season on two innings of hitless ball along with three strikeouts, complementing the work of Phelan and Mahley. Brian McConkey and McQuail each had two hits in the nightcap.
