Jimenez Dominates in 5-2 Boomers Win

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - Danny Jimenez led the way on the mound as the Schaumburg Boomers beat the Joliet Slammers 5-2 on a fantastic Fireworks Friday night at Boomers Stadium.

Alexi Colon hadn't hit a homerun all season. With just two in his professional career, it had been almost a full year since Colon last went yard on June 17, 2012 as a member of the Eugene Emeralds. But with one swing of the bat in the sixth inning trailing the Slammers, Schaumburg's left-handed centerfielder ended his streak, and helped the comeback Boomers strike once again.

The Boomers bats managed just two hits in the first five innings, as Schaumburg found itself down 2-1 early on. Jimenez's outstanding outing along with dynamic defense kept the home team in the game until Colon's solo shot tied the score at two to lead off the sixth and opened the floodgates for the Boomers offense.

Schaumburg sent nine batters to the plate in the sixth, scoring three runs on four hits to break the game open. Chad Mozingo and Sean Mahley each contributed run-scoring singles in the frame, one of his three hits on the night.

That 4-2 lead would be more than enough cushion for Jimenez, who delivered brilliantly on the mound as he locked down the Slammers over eight strong innings. The St. Charles native struck out 10 batters, which ties a franchise record set by Robby Donovan in 2012 and on Thursday by fellow Chicagoan Mike Giovenco. With the excellent effort, Jimenez saw his season ERA plummet from 5.57 to 4.66. The southpaw finished his work in the eighth by fielding two strong choppers back to the mound, exiting the field to a rousing round of applause.

The offensive momentum carried over past the sixth. In the seventh inning, Gerard Hall tied for the Frontier League lead with his eighth double of the season and Frank Pfister knocked him in for insurance to set the eventual final score at 5-2.

James Bierlein earned his third save of the season by retiring the Slammers in order in the ninth, highlighted by ending Joliet shortstop Michael Wing's eight-game hitting streak on a groundout.

The Boomers scored seven or more runs for the fourth straight game. Mahley's three hits and two RBI led the charge, while Mozingo added two base shots of his own. Pfister also extended his current hitting streak to five games. As a team, Schaumburg saw eight different batters reach base on 10 hits and added to its league-best doubles total with the 46th and 47th of the season.
