McQuail Homers, Boomers Win Third Straight

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - Steve McQuail hit his fifth homerun of the young season and the Schaumburg Boomers beat the Joliet Slammers 6-3. The Boomers bats came alive once again backed up by a solid pitching effort to capture Schaumburg's third straight win.

The Slammers jumped out in front against Schaumburg starting pitcher Chris Phelan, whose only blemish came on a second inning three-run homer by Kyle Maunus. But that would be the only time Joliet lit up the scoreboard, as Phelan earned the win on six strong innings of work.

The Boomers answered back two frames later, taking the lead for good by sending nine batters to the plate in the fourth and plating a quartet of runs. Brian McConkey got the scoring started by driving in Steve McQuail, who reached base on his first of three walks. Ty Nelson, Craig Hertler, and Frank Pfister each added an RBI in the inning, putting the Boomers up 4-3 and in the driver's seat.

McQuail led off the next inning with a solo shot to the Miller Lite Party Deck in left field to make it 5-3. That bomb was his fifth of the year which ties for tops in the Frontier League. Pfister added Schaumburg's sixth run and his second RBI of the game in the eighth inning to score Hertler, who moved into scoring position on a single and his fourth stolen base of the season.

Defense played a big part in preserving the Boomers lead, as Phelan forced a Joliet double play ball with the bases loaded in the fifth to end the inning. In the very next frame, Bobby Martin threw out a Joliet runner at the plate from center field to keep the Slammers at bay, Bierlein tossed a bases-loaded strikeout in the seventh to end another Joliet threat and Mahley shut the door with a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his first save.

Seven different Boomers had hits on the night, including three from Pfister to go with his pair of RBI. McConkey and Hertler each registered two hits, with Hertler contirbuting a pair of walks.

Come see the Boomers go for the Slammers sweep on Sunday as RHP Cody Griebling (2-1, 6.65) takes the mound opposite RHP Evan Anundsen (2-2, 4.87).
