Boomers Sweep Rascals to Make it Four Straight

O’FALLON, Mo. — Playing in the fourth doubleheader of the season, the Schaumburg Boomers recorded a DH sweep for the first time in franchise history, taking down the River City Rascals 11-8 and 5-3 to run its winning streak to four games, matching the longest of the season.

Schaumburg raced to an 8-0 lead in the opener, chasing River City starter Justin Sarratt after just 2.1 innings by scoring five times in the third. Steve McQuail’s two-run homer capped a string of four straight hits in the inning. Gerard Hall would add a homer in the game but the Boomers needed to hold off the Rascals late. River City struck for six runs in the seventh, bringing the tying run to the plate to nearly erase an 11-2 deficit. Chris Phelan earned the win with five shutout frames. Hall posted three hits and drove in three. Sean Mahley set a franchise standard with three stolen bases.

Game two saw the Rascals score an early run in the first. The Boomers opened a 2-1 lead on a two-run double from Craig Hertler and never trailed the rest of the way. The Rascals again threatened late, bringing the tying run to the plate in the sixth. Mike Giovenco improved to 2-3 by working 5.2 innings and Dexter Price shut the door in the seventh. Three Boomers posted multiple hits including Chad Mozingo, who finished 3-for-4 with a homer.

The Boomers, who collected a road sweep for just the second time in franchise history, are now 6-4 all-time in doubleheaders and have two more scheduled for the remainder of the season.

Schaumburg (17-11) returns home to open a six-game homestand on Tuesday night against the Frontier Greys. LHP Danny Jimenez (1-3, 3.86) is scheduled to start opposite LHP Eric Wooten (4-1, 2.50). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
