Boomers Tie Club Record Win Streak with Walk-Off

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.  – With a 5-4 12th-inning walk-off victory over the Frontier Greys on Tuesday night, the Schaumburg Boomers came through in the clutch once again with one swing of Star 105.5 Star of the Game Sean Mahley's hot bat on the first of two Bark in the Park Nights at Boomers Stadium this summer!

After trailing early, Schaumburg found ways to stay in the game and earn a comeback their eighth comeback win of the year, including four walkoffs and a 5-0 record in extra frames.

The Boomers entered Tuesday attempting to extend their season-long winning streak to five games, a mark that would tie a franchise record. But the Greys offense made it difficult early, scoring three runs in as many innings to take a 3-0 advantage.

Craig Hertler flashed his speed and knack for getting on-base as Schaumburg's leadoff man reached five tims in the contest and started the scoring in the bottom of the third. Following a Mike Valadez double and Bobby Martin sacrifice, Hertler dropped a perfectly placed RBI bunt down the first base line and reached uncontested to claim what would be the first of his three infield hits in the game.

The teams traded runs in the sixth to make the score 4-2. The Boomers tally came on a Brian McConkey fielder's choice, plating Chad Mozingo. Mozingo reached on a single and moved to third on a Steve McQuail towering fly ball to deep right field which found the outfield grass.

One inning later, Schaumburg struck with help from a pair of Greys errors. Martin and Hertler both came home without the team registering a hit. Mozingo would notch a bunt single later in the frame, one of six infield hits on the day for the Boomers.

Defense came up big for the Boomers to earn the victory. In the seventh, Valadez threw a bullet to nail Greys runner JJ Muse trying to steal third, with Frank Pfister making a diving catch on the receiving end and applying the tag in one motion to change the momentum of the inning and help keep the Greys off the scoreboard.

Both teams were held scoreless in four consecutive innings, from the seventh to the eleventh inning to set up a dramatic 12th-inning finish.

Mahley stepped to the plate with one out and Michael Demperio 90 feet away from victory. Demperio reached base after hustling out a bunt single and Valadez singled to right field on the hit-and-run to advance the Boomers second baseman to third. Mahley did the rest, lifting a looping line drive to left, sending both Demperio and the Schaumburg faithful home happy.

Mozingo had four hits on the night, scoring once, while Hertler, who extended his hitting streak to seven straight, collected three hits, a run and a run batted in. McQuail and Valadez each contributed two hits of their own in the win, while Gerard Hall and McConkey had one run batted in apiece.

Schaumburg's pitching staff turned in a brave effort on the mound. Danny Jimenez pitched six innings, giving up four runs, but the bullpen came through in a big way. Dan Lazzaroni, Devon Pearson, James Bielein, Matt Kuna, and Preston Hatcher combined for six innings of two-hit baseball, with Hatcher earning his first win as a member of the Boomers.

The Boomers are in for a quick turnaround, as tomorrow's game has an 11 a.m. start time for Day Camp Day! Boomers Stadium's seating bowl is already sold out with excited campers, but lawn tickets are still available for the perfect matinee game or extra-long lunch break.
