Boomers Suffer First Extra-Inning Defeat

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Schaumburg Boomers celebrated Superhero Night with a pitching battle of epic proportions, before ultimately falling to the Lake Erie Crushers 3-1 in a thrilling extra-inning contest.

A spectactular Fireworks Friday show capped off the night led by Schaumburg starting pitcher Chris Phelan. Phelan followed his last outing, a five-inning shutout effort versus River City, with an incredible eight-inning performance, giving up just one run on four hits. The Boomers righty lowered his ERA to 1.86, good for sixth-best in the league.

Both pitchers put up zeros for the first five innings before Gerard Hall lit up the scoreboard by doubling and coming home off the bat of Frank Pfister. That would be all the offensive production before the Crushers plated a run in the eighth on a Juan Sanchez RBI-single. The pitching duel continued into extra innings, with both sides holding strong until the 12th inning, when Lake Erie plated the winning two runs on a solo homer by Andrew Davis to lead off the inning and a David Roney single later in the frame.
