McQuail Goes Deep, Boomers Win Big

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - Schaumburg Boomers designated hitter Steve McQuail delivered a game-changing blast over the Miller Lite Party Deck at Boomers Stadium to spark an eventual 11-4 victory Saturday.

Schaumburg and Lake Erie came into the night as two of the best offensive teams in the Frontier League, with the Crushers boasting a league-high .285 team batting average, while the Boomers .264 mark was good for the fourth-best mark.

Neither offense disappointed on the night with Lake Erie jumping out in front on a two-run double by Daniel Bowman in the first before the Boomers bounced back in the second. Sean Mahley tripled in a pair of runs and scored on a single off the bat of Mike Valadez to give Schaumburg a 3-2 lead.

The Boomers scored again in the third when McQuail drove in Frank Pfister to make it 4-2 ballgame, but a controversial call that resulted in a double play ended the Boomers chances of adding to their lead in the frame.

A Crushers tally in the fifth closed the gap to a one-run deficit, giving Lake Erie the momentum and a fighting chance. But McQuail put the Boomers in the driver’s seat with a two-run bomb to deep left field. The New York native went 3-5 with 3 RBI and two runs scored to lead the way for the Boomers. By inning’s end, the Boomers led 7-3 after Mahley knocked in McConkey with a single.

Schaumburg cruised from there, adding four more runs by game’s end to cement an 11-4 win and the 20th victory of the season. Chad Mozingo, who contributed two hits on the night, drove in a pair with his sixth inning single, and Michael Demperio followed suit in the seventh with a two-RBI single of his own to right field.

Eight different Boomers reached base in the winning effort as Gerard Hall followed up last night’s three-hit game with a four-hit show, and Mahley finished the night with two hits, three RBI, and a .387 batting average.

Mike Giovenco earned the hard-fought victory, powering through 6.2 innings and striking out five while giving up all four Crushers runs. Boomers newcomer Chris Armstrong made an impact his first day on the roster, going 1.1 scoreless innings and fanning two, while Mahley switched to the mound in the ninth and continued his season-long shutout pitching streak to close the game.
