Boomers Drop Finale at Joliet

JOLIET, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers were edged by the Joliet Slammers 3-1 in the finale of a three-game set on Sunday.

Schaumburg opened the scoring with a single run in the first inning, scoring first for the fifth time in six contests on the roadtrip. Craig Hertler drew a leadoff walk from Joliet starter Corey Kimes and came around to score on a bases loaded sacrifice fly off the bat of Chad Mozingo. Joliet evened the game in the second and took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the fifth against Schaumburg starter Cody Griebling (4-4). Griebling worked five innings and allowed three runs to suffer the loss.

The Boomers had plenty of chances, placing runners on base in eight of the nine innings. Schaumburg totaled 10 hits in the defeat and loaded the bases in the top of the ninth against Joliet closer Justin Erasmus but came up empty. Four individuals posted two hits for Schaumburg including newcomer Ryan Brockett, signed before the game.

Schaumburg opens a six-game homestand on Tuesday night against the Southern Illinois Miners. First pitch at Boomers Stadium is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. RHP Matt Kuna (3-0, 1.19) is scheduled to start for Schaumburg opposite RHP Preston Vancil (4-1, 1.88).
