Boomers Squander Lead; Comeback Falls Short

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Schaumburg Boomers jumped out to an early 3-0 only to see it dissolve into a 6-5 loss to the Southern Illinois Miners Wednesday evening at Boomers Stadium.

Chris Phelan entered Wednesday night having given up just one run in his previous 21 innings on the mound. Schaumburg's ace stretched that streak to 24 1/3 before giving up a run in the fifth.

This game posed an interesting matchup, as both teams started the day with top-five batting averages in the Frontier League and both starting pitchers boasted undefeated records with ERAs below 2.00.

The pitching won out early and neither side lit up the scoreboard for the first three innings before Mike Valadez plated Brian McConkey with a single to right field in the fourth to put the Boomers on top 1-0. Alexi Colon followed with his eighth double of the season to drive in Jordan Dean and Valadez to give Schaumburg a 3-0 lead.

Miners batters battled back by scoring six unanswered runs and took the lead for good thanks to a four-run eighth inning.

The Boomers scored two of their own in the eighth to close the gap to 6-5, but that's as close as the Schaumburg would get despite getting the tying run to third with one out in the ninth. Jordan Dean drove a rocket to the wall in right field to triple home McConkey, who reached to begin the frame on his third base on balls of the night. Sean Mahley followed with a sacrifice fly to knock in Dean from third.

Four Schaumburg batters tallied two hits on the night with Alexi Colon adding a pair of RBI. Frank Pfister and Steve McQuail both extended their hitting streaks to five and eight games respectively.
