5,788 See Holiday Hit Parade Lead to 7-1 Win

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – The Schaumburg Boomers (24-19) celebrated the 4th of the July with fireworks and the third largest crowd in franchise history as 5,788 were on hand to enjoy a 7-1 victory over the Southern Illinois Miners as the home team pounded out 12 hits Thursday at Boomers Stadium.

Two big innings were all Schaumburg needed to send the home crowd home happy, but the fireworks did their part too! The Boomers plated three runs in the second inning off Southern Illinois starter LHP Richard Sullivan and then four more runs in the fourth to take a commanding 7-1 advantage.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Mike Valadez got the scoring started in the second inning for the Boomers, hitting the third Schaumburg single in a row to score Jordan Dean and Ty Nelson. Colon made it four straight two out hits and plated Valadez to put the Boomers on top 3-1.

Schaumburg blew open the game with a four-run seventh inning in which the Boomers hit for the cycle. Brian McConkey started with a one-out double followed by Dean's second of three hits on the night. Nelson earned his two RBI on the night with a bases-clearing triple to put the home team up 5-1. Valadez smashed a sac fly to deep center to score Nelson before Colon put the 370-foot exclamation point on the night.

The bottom five hitters in the order went a combined 9-for-18 knocking in and scoring all seven of the Boomers runs. Ty Nelson made just his fifth start in right field going 2-for-4 with a two-RBI triple and Alexi Colon continued his hot-hitting habits with a 2-for-3 night, which included his fourth homerun of the season.

Chicago native Mike Giovenco notched his fourth win of the season allowing just one run on three hits in five innings work. James Bierlein and Sean Mahley polished off the victory with four combined shutout innings in relief.

The Boomers begin a three-game series to round out the six-game homestand against the River City Rascals Friday night at Boomers Stadium. St. Charles, Ill. native Danny Jimenez (2-4, 3.95) will toss for the Boomers and challenge RHP Tommy Mendoza (4-3, 5.12) for River City with a 6:30 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
