Boomers Boast Five Frontier League All-Stars

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — For the second straight season, the Schaumburg Boomers will be heavily represented at the 2013 Frontier League All-Star Game as Sean Mahley, Steve McQuail and Mike Valadez were announced today as starters for the West Division squad and Gerard Hall and Chris Phelan were named reserves.

All five players will represent Schaumburg at the 2013 Frontier League All-Star game presented by 84 Lumber on Wednesday, July 17 in Washington, Pennsylvania at the home of the Wild Things at 7:05 p.m. In 2012, the Boomers also sent five players to the mid-summer classic with Mahley being a repeat selection for Schaumburg in the franchise’s second season. Scroll to the bottom for the complete All-Star Rosters.

McQuail’s 11 home runs are tied for the Frontier League lead and the New York native has been a force in the middle of the Boomers order all year long having played in all 46 of the Boomers games in 2013. The 6-foot-2 slugger is fifth in the league in hits (50), fourth in total bases (96), third in extra-base hits (24) and fifth in slugging percentage (.568). McQuail is also personally responsible for three of the Boomers six walk-off wins in the first half including the first walk-off home run in franchise history and Sunday’s single to complete the sweep of River City.

It’s the second consecutive All-Star Game for Mahley, who leads the Boomers in batting average and at .321, also ranks seventh in the league. The second year pro has nine doubles, two triples and 24 RBI as an outfielder, but the versatile Mahley also has yet to allow a run in 8.1 innings of scoreless relief on the mound for Manager Jamie Bennett.

Known for his phenomenal work behind the plate as one of, if not the top defensive catcher in the league, Valadez has put together a complete first half with his best offensive stretch in his seven-year minor league career. In his second season with the Boomers, the Los Angeles native has a .314 average and six doubles to go along with the game winning, walk-off single in Saturday’s comeback win over the Rascals.

Phelan has been the surprising ace of the Schaumburg staff so far in 2013. The six-foot right-hander did not start the season as a member of the rotation but has stifled opposing hitters to earn a 3-0 record and a miniscule 1.72 ERA over his 47 innings of work. Ranking third in the league in earned run average, the Farmingdale State College product has held opponents to just nine runs, 30 hits and a paltry .182 average.

Hall, the Schaumburg shortstop, has also contributed an all-around first half to help the Boomers to a 27-19 record. Hall boasts a line of .277/.319/.441 in 45 games for the Boomers to go along with his stellar defense up the middle. The Washington D.C. native’s 13 doubles are tied with McQuail for second on the Boomers as well as sixth in the league and Hall’s 24 runs scored is second on the club as well. The 5-foot-9 infielder has 49 hits, 2 triples, 4 homers and 19 runs batted in a strong start to 2013.

The general manager, field manager, three coaches, radio broadcaster and two members of the local media cast votes for each of the Frontier League’s 14 teams voted to determine the players who will participate in the All-Star Game. With three additional players to be added on Thursday by the West Division Manager Phil Warren of the Gateway Grizzlies, the Boomers still could have further all-stars to announce.

Last year, the Boomers sent 10 representatives to the annual mid-season classic on July 10, 2012 in Normal, Ill. Frank Pfister started the game as the West Division third baseman and was joined by teammates Cameron Roth, Patrick Mincey, Chad Mozingo and Sean Mahley. Jamie Bennett, as manager of the team with the best record at the break, selected the coaching staff for the West Team with Bench Coach Mike Kashirsky, Hitting Coach C.J. Thieleke, Pitching Coach Paul Kubon and Athletic Trainer Scott Waehler making the trip from Schaumburg as well.

Beginning on Friday, July 12 at 6:30 p.m. with Star Wars Night, the Boomers have one final home series before the break as the Traverse City Beach Bums invade Schaumburg this weekend. Tickets to experience the fun and excitement of Schaumburg Boomers Baseball are on sale now over the phone at 847.461.3695, online at www.boomersbaseball.com or in person at the Boomers Stadium Box Office located at 1999 Springinsguth Road in Schaumburg.
