Boomers Open Second Half with Loss in Extras

WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Schaumburg Boomers opened the second half of the season with just the second extra-inning defeat of the season, falling 5-4 to the Washington Wild Things in 10 innings on Friday night.

The Boomers raced to a 3-0 lead against Washington starter Shawn Sanford. Steve McQuail drilled a two-run homer just four batters into the game to hand Schaumburg a 2-0 lead. McQuail won the Homerun Derby as part of the league’s All-Star festivities at Washington on Tuesday and owns 12 homers on the season, tied for the league lead. Brian McConkey extended the lead to 3-0 with a two-out two strike single in the top of the third. Sanford settled in, working seven innings.

Seth Webster was extremely effective for the Boomers, working 6.2 innings. Making just his third pro start, Webster allowed only one run on three hits entering the seventh but Washington scored two runs to tie the game in the frame. Schaumburg scored I nthe top of the 10th on an RBI groundout from Jordan Dean but the Wild Things won the game with two in the bottom of the inning.

Stewart Ijames led off the tenth with a homer to tie the contest and A.J. Nunziato lined the first pitch from closer Dexter Price into right to score the game winning run with two outs. McQuail, Sean Mahley, and Chad Mozingo collected two hits apiece for the Boomers, who are 6-2 in extra-inning games this season.

The series continues at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday night with RHP Matt Kuna (3-2, 1.94) on the hill for the Boomers against RHP Gary Lee (4-5, 3.77).
