Early Offense Propels Boomers

WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Schaumburg Boomers built a 6-0 lead and held off the Washington Wild Things 6-3 to win on the road Saturday night, stopping a brief two-game slide.

Sean Mahley, All-Star Game MVP on Wednesday at Washington, roped a triple into the right field corner to bring home Frank Pfister with the first run in the top of the second. Mahley scored moments later on a groundout by Ty Nelson. Schaumburg tacked on three unearned runs when Brian McConkey nailed a three-run opposite field homer in the third. McConkey would add another RBI in the sixth on a single, finishing with four RBIs.

Washington struggled against starter Matt Kuna. Kuna twirled six innings and did not allow a run, striking out four to improve to 4-2. Washington scored three runs in the seventh. Dexter Price bounced back to post the save in the ninth, his sixth of the year. Schaumburg finished with eight hits in the game, two each from McConkey, Mahley, and Steve McQuail. The Boomers have registered seven or more hits 17 times in the last 20 contests.
