RECAP: Boomers Drop Double Dip to Freedom

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The visiting Florence Freedom made a long day even longer for the Schaumburg Boomers and the home faithful after taking both games of the day/night doubleheader at Boomers Stadium on Tuesday.

GAME ONE RECAP

The fourth largest crowd of the season, 4,348, was on hand for the opener of a doubleheader between the Schaumburg Boomers and the Florence Freedom on Tuesday, a game won 4-1 by the visitors. 

Florence opened a 1-0 lead in the first with an unearned run against starter Chris Phelan. Phelan went on to pitch six innings, allowing just one earned run, but suffered his first loss of the season. The New York native struck out four.

The Freedom built a 2-0 lead in the fourth on a two-out single and added two in the ninth to pad the advantage. Brian McConkey provided the lone offense with a solo homer in the seventh as the Boomers struggled to solve starter Jason Wilson, who worked 7.2 innings in the win. McConkey posted three of the six hits for Schaumburg. Chad Mozingo extended his hitting streak to 12 games in the loss.

GAME TWO RECAP

The Schaumburg Boomers dropped the second game of the split doubleheader, falling 4-2 to the Florence Freedom on Tuesday night. 

Florence plated three runs in the fourth inning, batting around against starter Cody Griebling. Griebling, who worked five innings in the defeat, allowed a single run in the fifth as the Freedom staked a 4-0 lead. Michael Valadez brought the Boomers within 4-2 with a two-run single in the fifth, but that was all the team could muster against starter Chuck Weaver. Weaver followed in the steps of game one starter Jason Wilson by working into the eighth. Jorge Marban closed out his second game of the day for his 15th save.

Chad Mozingo was able to extend his hitting streak to 13 games with a fourth inning single. The streak is the longest of the season by a Boomers player and two away from matching the franchise mark. Clark Labitan tossed two innings out of the bullpen and Devon Pearson 1.1.Chris Armstrong also posted a pair of outs as the bullpen did not allow a run.

The Boomers eight-game homestand continues as the Boomers look to salvage the third game with the Florence Freedom on Half-Price Wednesday at Boomers Stadium. RHP Seth Webster (1-1, 2.89) starts for the Boomers opposite RHP Dan Jensen (5-3, 3.39) for the Freedom.
