RECAP: Phelan Dominant in Victory

JOLIET, Ill. — Rookie right-hander Chris Phelan was dominant in a 10-1 win for the Schaumburg Boomers over the Joliet Slammers, setting a franchise record with 11 strikeouts as the Boomers recorded a road sweep.

Schaumburg has now won six games in a row to equal a franchise record set earlier this season. The winning streak follows a five game home slide. Phelan (4-1) allowed just two hits in the contest. Following a two-out single in the bottom of the third, the Frontier League All-Star retired 16 in a row before the leadoff man reached in the ninth, and eventually came around to score the lone run.

The Boomers provided Phelan with plenty of run support in the third, sending 10 men to the plate and scoring four runs. Schaumburg took advantage of wildness from Joliet starter Corey Kimes, drawing four walks in the inning. Michael Valadez drew a bases loaded walk to force home the first run. Jordan Dean added a two-run single in the inning. Schaumburg added four more in the fifth and the rout was on. Dean drove home four in the game. Four individuals posted two this in the game as the Boomers finished with 11. Schaumburg collected 10 or more hits in all three games while Joliet accumulated a total of 10.

The Boomers (38-28) return home Saturday for a three-game series with Rockford. Reserve your piece of the action by calling 847.461.3695 or visiting www.boomersbaseball.com. RHP Cody Griebling (5-5, 5.03) will start for the Boomers opposite LHP Nick Cicio (2-4, 4.81).
