Dodgers Purchase Contract of Boomers RHP Carl

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The first member of the Schaumburg Boomers to have his contract purchased by a major league organization is right-handed pitcher Edwin Carl who will join the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, it was announced today.

“A well deserved opportunity for Edwin Carl,” said Boomers Manager Jamie Bennett. “He is a very talented young man and has been an asset both on the field and in the clubhouse in his time with the Boomers.”

Carl, 24, becomes the first member of the Schaumburg Boomers to have his contract purchased by an MLB organization and will report to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, the Dodgers High-A affiliate. Carl, who was scheduled to start on Monday, signed with the Boomers as a free agent on July 24. The hard throwing righty did not allow a run in two appearances and over his six innings in Schaumburg, collected five strikeouts and surrendered just three hits.

Prior to joining the Boomers, Carl spent four seasons in the Kansas City Royals organization and advanced as high as Double-A with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Over his 203 career innings, the six-footer compiled a 13-7 record with a 3.59 ERA and 13 saves to go along with 237 strikeouts. The Farmington, N.M. native’s best stint came with the Idaho Falls Chukars, where he went 3-1 with a 1.36 ERA and racked up a staggering 71 strikeouts in just 33 innings.

Before embarking on his professional career, Carl spent two seasons at the University of New Mexico, where he earned a 7-3 record and a 5.97 ERA as a member of the Lobos baseball team. The righty began his collegiate career at Eastern Arizona College where he was named the 2008 Eastern Arizona College MVP and compiled a 2.51 ERA in 61 innings. Carl was also a two-time all-state pitcher and outfielder at Piedra Vista High School, where he was named New Mexico Player of the Year in 2006 as a senior.

The Boomers complete a three-game series against the Rockford Aviators on Monday, August 5 at 6:30 p.m. on Bring a Buddy Monday at Boomers Stadium.
