Boomers Sweep Road Doubleheader 4-2 & 6-0

NORMAL, Ill. — The Schaumburg Booomers pulled within a half game of the lead in the Frontier League’s West Division with a doubleheader sweep of the Normal CornBelters on Thursday night.

Schaumburg has won four straight, 10 of 11, and owns a seven game road win streak, tied for the longest in the league this season. Schaumburg is 7-5 all-time in doubleheaders with six played this year.

The Boomers scored a 4-2 win in the opener, plating three first inning runs. Brian McConkey’s homer in the sixth inning provided insurance as Mike Giovenco won his fifth consecutive decision with 5.1 innings of work, improving to 8-4 on the year.

Mike Valadez went 2-2 in Game One while Steve McQuail and Frank Pfister each had a hit and RBI in the contest. Adam Tollefson pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn his second save since rejoining Schaumburg on July 27.

Game Two saw a pair of franchise firsts in a 6-0 victory. Chris Phelan twirled the first complete game shutout in franchise history, punctuating the sweep with a strikeout to end the game. Phelan fanned five and allowed just five hits in the win.

Gerard Hall sprinted around the bases for the first inside-the-park home run in team history in the top of the fifth, a two-run shot deep to center. Alexi Colon reached in all three plate appearances finishing 2-2 with 2 runs scored and a base on balls and Ty Nelson was 1-3 with a run and a walk.

The Boomers (42-29) will aim for the road sweep on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. RHP Cody Griebling (5-5, 4.95) starts for the Boomers against RHP Michael Schweiss (3-2, 3.71).
