RECAP: Boomers Drop Opener with Rockford

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Despite accumulating 11 hits and putting the tying runs on base in the ninth, the Schaumburg Boomers fell in the opener of a home series to the Rockford Aviators by a 4-1 count.

Schaumburg placed runners on base in eight of the nine innings but couldn’t break through with a big hit, finishing 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position and stranding 13 men on base. The Boomers spoiled another quality start from All-Star Chris Phelan, who worked 6.2 innings and allowed three runs on six hits but suffered the loss.

Four individuals recorded two hits for the Boomers. Sean Mahley drove home the lone run with an RBI single in the fifth. Rockford scored single runs in the fourth, fifth, seventh, and ninth innings in the contest.

The Boomers (45-31) are tied for first in the West Division and continue the last six game homestand of the season on Wednesday night against the Rockford Aviators at 6:30 p.m. RHP Mike Giovenco (8-4, 3.55) starts for the Boomers against RHP Nick Anderson (4-7, 6.60).
