Comeback Boomers Break Out Brooms

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers swept away the Traverse City Beach Bums by rallying from down a pair of runs to tally a 5-3 takedown on Sunday and extend their winning streak to four games.

Ryan Still flared a two out, two-run single into shallow center to drive home the game's first two runs in the top of the second. The Boomers came back with a run in the fourth and took the lead with three runs in the fifth. Steve McQuail tied the game with a double down the right field line, scoring Sean Mahley. McQuail scored the go ahead run on an infield single and Bubba Dotson added an RBI single in the frame. Chase Burch homered in the sixth for Traverse City, but the Boomers added an insurance run in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Chris Phelan logged his team-best 10th quality start, earning the win by allowing three runs in 6.2 innings. The All-Star allowed eight hits as the Boomers earned their eighth sweep of the season. Mahley came on to pitch in the ninth, notching his third save. McQuail recorded three hits and scored three times.

The Boomers (49-32) remain in first place headed into a key six-game roadtrip following a Monday off-day. Schaumburg visits Southern Illinois on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Mike Giovenco (8-5, 3.79) starts for the Boomers opposite RHP Preston Vancil (7-4, 3.86).
