Bennett Acquires Sanford & Vasquez at Deadline

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — With his club holding to a three-game lead in the Frontier League’s West Division, Schaumburg Boomers Manager Jamie Bennett pulled the trigger on a pair of trades to strengthen the squad before Monday’s transaction deadline and acquired RHP Shawn Sanford and OF Justin Vasquez.

Schaumburg acquired starting pitcher Sanford from the Washington Wild Things for a player to be named later. The Boomers were in need of another starting pitcher for the stretch run following the injury to Cody Griebling and the 6-foot Sanford is fourth in the league in strikeouts (88) and innings pitched (113.1).

Sanford, 24, is in his fifth season of professional baseball after four campaigns as a San Francisco Giants farmhand and the first part of 2013 with the Washington Wild Things. Prior to joining the Boomers, the New Jersey native boasted a 28-30 record and a 3.40 ERA in 465.2 professional innings. The 200-pound right-hander has also racked up 341 strikeouts against just 128 walks and 435 hits allowed.

Originally selected in the 43rd round of the 2006 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Cinnaminson High School in New Jersey, Sanford elected to attend the University of South Florida. Sanford improved his draft status after three stellar years at USF, which included a 4.26 ERA in 195.1 innings as a member of the Bulls baseball team, and the Giants drafted Sanford in the 13th round of the 2009 First Year Player Draft.

Schaumburg sent OF Bubba Dotson and LHP Devon Pearson to the Frontier Greys in exchange for rookie outfielder Justin Vasquez.

Vasquez, 24, held a .255/.355/.405 stat line in 78 games with the Greys in his first professional season before joining the Boomers on August 19. The left-handed hitter has 21 extra-base hits including seven homers and 33 runs batted in to go along with 45 free passes.

A career .329 hitter over five seasons at Division II Delmont Abbey College in Charlotte, N.C., Vasquez collected 40 homers, 14 triples and 57 doubles in 195 collegiate games. After an injury shortened junior season, Vasquez’s best season came as a fifth-year senior when the 5-foot-10 outfielder batter .362 with 10 homers and 37 RBI in 46 games in 2012.

The Schaumburg Boomers return home to beautiful Boomers Stadium on Kids Eat Free Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on August 27. All kids 12 and under receive a voucher for a FREE meal redeemable at concession stands BEFORE the end of the second inning.
