RECAP: Boomers Blanked in Trip Opener

MARION, Ill. — Despite a 4-0 loss to the Southern Illinois Miners in the opener of a key six-game roadtrip, the Schaumburg Boomers remained three games ahead in the Frontier League’s West Division.

Schaumburg managed just two hits as three Southern Illinois hurlers combined on the shutout. Starter Preston Vancil took a no-hitter into the sixth before a single from Alexi Colon. The Miners gave Vancil all the run support needed in the first inning, plating three. Mike Giovenco battled through six for the Boomers, allowing just the three first inning tallies in the loss. Sean Mahley registered the other hit for Schaumburg, who drew four walks in the contest.

The Boomers (49-33) continue the trip with the second game at Southern Illinois on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Tony Delmonico (0-1, 6.86) starts for the Boomers opposite RHP Travis Bradshaw (3-0, 2.75). Schaumburg will return home for a three game set on August 27. Playoff tickets are also now on sale. Reserve your piece of the action by calling 847.461.3695 or visiting www.boomersbaseball.com.
