RECAP: Boomers Survive at Southern Illinois

MARION, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers extended their lead in the Frontier League’s West Division to four games by outlasting the Southern Illinois Miners 7-6 on the road Wednesday night.

The Boomers never trailed in the contest but failed to hold a 6-2 lead late before an RBI single from Sean Mahley in the ninth put the team in front for good. Alexi Colon helped Schaumburg build the lead by accounting for four runs. Colon tripled home runs in the third and fifth, eventually scoring in both frames as well. Southern Illinois evened the game with four runs in the seventh, but the Boomers rallied against the sixth Southern Illinois hurler to secure the win. Schaumburg drew 10 walks in the contest.

Tony Delmonico threw a season high five innings, allowing just one run and leaving with the lead. The righty struck out a season high four. Clark Labitan earned the win despite blowing the save. Dexter Price finished off the win by stranding the tying run at second in the ninth. Colon, Jordan Dean, and Gerard Hall posted two hits each. Hall drove home three runs.

The Boomers (50-33) are now tied for the top record in the league with 13 games remaining and will continue the trip with the rubber match at Southern Illinois on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Shawn Sanford (8-5, 3.02) will make his debut after being acquired at the transaction deadline on Monday. Southern Illinois counters with RHP Brett Kennedy (1-0, 3.86).

Schaumburg will return home for a three game set on August 27 and playoff tickets are also now on sale. Reserve your piece of the action by calling 847.461.3695 or visiting www.boomersbaseball.com.
