RECAP: Webster Shuts Down East Leaders

AVON, Ohio — Seth Webster twirled his second complete game of the season to help the Schaumburg Boomers down the East Division leading Lake Erie Crushers 5-1 on Friday night.

Webster needed just 103 pitches to complete a two-hitter, allowing a bunt single and a solo homer to Russell Moldenhauer in the seventh. The rookie won his fourth consecutive start by striking out seven and became the first hurler to throw a pair of nine-inning complete game in a season in franchise history. The complete game was the fourth of the season by the Boomers.

The Boomers opened a 4-0 lead by scoring runs in the first and fourth with two in the sixth. All four runs came across with two outs. Brian McConkey and Justin Vasquez posted RBI singles in the first and fourth before Ty Nelson blooped home a single to plate two in the sixth. The last run scored in the top of the ninth on a successful Gerard Hall squeeze. Steve McQuail and Nelson notched two hits each as the Boomers finished with 10.

The Boomers (52-33) have a magic number of seven with 11 games to play and own a 5.5 game lead in the West Division along with the best record in the league though Gateway was losing which would lower the magic number further. Less than a month ago, Schaumburg was down 5.5 games following a five game losing streak. The roadtrip continues against Lake Erie on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. A pair of All-Stars will square off with RHP Chris Phelan (6-2, 2.16) on the hill for the Boomers opposite LHP Matt Rein (8-5, 2.18). Schaumburg will return home for a three game set on August 27. Playoff tickets are also now on sale. Reserve your piece of the action by calling 847.461.3695 or visiting www.boomersbaseball.com.
