RECAP: Boomers Fall in Trip Finale

AVON, Ohio — The Schaumburg Boomers were unable to complete a road sweep of the Lake Erie Crushers, falling 11-2 in the series finale on Sunday. Schaumburg still posted a winning record on the trip, finishing 4-2 to distance their lead in the West Division.

Russell Moldenhauer hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to put the Crushers ahead. Lake Erie scored in seven different frames in banging out 19 hits, the most allowed by the Boomers in franchise history. The Boomers struggled against All-Star Dave Middendorf, who carried a no-hitter into the fifth.

The two runs scored by the Boomers came on an RBI single from Ty Nelson in the seventh and a solo homer from Steve McQuail in the ninth, his 18th of the year. Mike Giovenco dropped his third straight start, allowing six runs in five innings.

The Boomers (53-34) have a magic number of four with nine games left in the season and own a 6.5 game lead in the West Division along with the best record in the league. Less than a month ago, Schaumburg was down 5.5 games following a five game losing streak.

The Boomers are back home on Tuesday following an off day. The Frontier Greys visit to begin a three game series at 6:30 p.m. RHP Tony Delmonico (0-1, 5.89) will start for the Boomers opposite RHP Jonathan Kountis (0-4, 6.75).
