RECAP: BOOMERS CLAIM WEST DIVISION CROWN

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The Schaumburg Boomers became the first team in the Frontier League to secure a playoff slot this season by scoring a 3-2 win over the Evansville Otters to sew up their first ever West Division Championship.

The Boomers raced to a 3-0 lead for starter Chris Phelan, the Frontier League leader in ERA. Justin Vasquez tripled in the top of the second and scored on a groundout from Michael Valadez. Sean Mahley extended the lead to 3-0 with a two out two run double in the fifth.

Phelan worked 6.2 innings to post his seventh win of the year. Evansville would not go away, scoring runs in the fifth and seventh to claw within 3-2. Adam Tollefson came out of the bullpen and recorded a strikeout to leave the bases loaded in the seventh, helping pave the way to the win. Dexter Price worked the ninth for his 15th save.

Mahley collected three hits as the Boomers notched 11. Jordan Dean, Alexi Colon and Vasquez posted two hits each. The Boomers (56-35) will continue the series with Evansville on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. RHP Mike Giovenco (8-7, 4.16) starts for the Boomers against RHP Evan Mott (1-0, 2.60).

The only place to see playoff baseball in Chicagoland is in Schaumburg as the Boomers begin postseason play on Saturday, September 7 at 8 p.m.
