Manager, Broadcaster of the Year & McQuail All-Star

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Organization of the Year in the 14-team Frontier League was not the only prize claimed by the 2013 Schaumburg Boomers as second-year skipper, Jamie Bennett was named Manager of the Year, Designated Hitter Steve McQuail was named to the Post-Season All-Star Team and Tim Calderwood earned Broadcaster of the Year honors.

Second-year manager Jamie Bennett led his 2013 squad to the best record in the Frontier League at 58-35 and was the overwhelming favorite for the Frontier League Manager of the Year Award. Through 94 games this season, Bennett holds a career 113-77 record as manager of the Boomers, which is good for a .595 winning percentage. The pro teams Jamie has worked for have never posted a losing record, including two seasons as Manager of Schaumburg and five as a Pitching Coach for the Gary SouthShore RailCats.

“It’s a great honor and I am truly humbled,” said Bennett. “As much as it is an individual award, it’s really a testament to these players and this coaching staff. Nothing would be possible without contributions from everyone here, and I’m grateful to this group of men for all of their hard work so far this season.”

McQuail, 24, captured the Home Run Derby crown at the All-Star Break while representing the West Division at the Mid-Summer Classic before adding Post-Season All-Star to his list of 2013 accolades. The New York native currently sports a .303/.398/.561 stat line in 92 games played this season. McQuail matched his own franchise-record with his 20th home run Tuesday and is now tied for second in the league.

“I couldn’t think of a more deserving person than Steve,” Bennett said. “I am very proud of him not only for what he’s done on the field and the improvements he’s made this season, but also because Steve’s one of the best clubhouse guys I’ve had the privilege to work with.”

The radio voice of the Boomers, Tim Calderwood, took home Broadcaster of the Year honors as well. The man who began as a broadcast intern in Schaumburg in 2002, earned the award for the second time in his career, with the first coming in 2009 during his time with the Traverse City Beach Bums.

“I am humbled to receive this award,” said Calderwood. “The Frontier League is an extended family to me and it is a special honor to represent a great group of broadcasters. The 2013 year has been a whirlwind for me and one that I will never forget. I am proud to be able to represent such an outstanding organization from the ownership to the players and staff. I love the game of baseball and sharing the action on a nightly basis. Having a great broadcast partner in Benjamin Kelly, who shares in this award, helps make it unique and special every day.”
