Vasquez and Martin in the Fold for 2014

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers and Manager of the Year Jamie Bennett announced the return of a pair of outfielders in Justin Vasquez and Bobby Martin to the squad for the 2014 season.

Vasquez, 24, was acquired in a late-season trade that proved to be crucial for the Boomers playoff run. In 14 games in a Boomers uniform after being acquired from the Frontier Greys, the rookie posted a .333/.382/.451 line with four doubles and a triple to stabilize the Schaumburg third outfield spot. The 5-foot-10 lefty continued that success in the playoffs with a .333 average (7-for-21) and tied for the team lead in runs scored with seven over the incredible six-game run to the Frontier League Championship.

Martin, 23, returns to Schaumburg after appearing in 62 games for the Frontier League Champion Boomers in 2013. The fourth outfielder for Manager Jamie Bennett’s squad in 2013, Martin had a number of memorable moments in the form of late-game heroics during the title run. On June 27 in Traverse City, a Martin chopper in the 11th gave Schaumburg a 1-0 victory and weeks later against that same Beach Bums team, Martin capped off a crazy game with a two-RBI single on an 0-2 pitch with two outs in the ninth to give the Boomers a 10-9 win.

With the additions of Vasquez and Martin, Schaumburg has six players officially signed to contracts for the 2014 season. Both outfielders join pitchers Dexter Price and James Bierlein as well as infielders Jordan Dean and Ryan Normoyle on what will be a maximum 34-man roster when Spring Training begins in late April at Boomers Stadium in Schaumburg.
