Pair of Outfielders Added to Boomers Roster

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers, the 2013 Frontier League Champions and Organization of the Year, agreed to terms with two outfielders with the return of Alexi Colon and the signing of free agent Jordan Owen, it was announced today.

Colon, 24, returns to roam the Boomers Stadium outfield after a being a key contributor to the Schaumburg Championship in just his second year of professional baseball. A former farmhand of the San Diego Padres, Colon played 80 games for the Boomers and earned a .255/.332/.417 stat line. The 5-foot-8 lefty added 15 doubles, five triples and five home runs for the Boomers during the regular season and had a knack for delivering in key situations for Manager Jamie Bennett.

In just his second game as a member of the Boomers, Colon collected the first of the team’s 16 last at-bat victories during the regular season with a bases loaded single to right in the 11th inning to secure a 3-2 win over the Washington Wild Things. But perhaps his biggest clutch contribution came in the decisive game of the semifinals against the Florence Freedom. With a runner on and his team trailing 8-5, Colon belted a two-run blast to jump-start another Schaumburg come-from-behind victory in the playoffs.

Owen, 23, joins the Boomers as a rookie free agent out of the University of Tennessee-Martin where the 5-foot-11 right-hander posted a .303/.378/.520 line with a total of 43 doubles, seven triples and 35 home runs through his four-year collegiate career. Owen was named All-Conference in the Ohio Valley Conference twice and was named to the all-star teams during summer ball stints in the Valley, Mink and Northwoods Leagues.

With the additions of Colon and Owen, the Boomers officially have 11 players signed to contracts for the 2014 season. The latest additions will join fellow outfielders Justin Vasquez and Bobby Martin; pitchers James Bierlein, Preston Hatcher, Clark Labitan, Matt Lamothe, and Dexter Price; and infielders Jordan Dean and Ryan Normoyle on what will be a maximum 34-man roster when Spring Training begins in late-April at Boomers Stadium in Schaumburg.
