Boomers Open Tryout Set for April 25 in Schaumburg

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers and Manager of the Year Jamie Bennett announced two ways to audition for a spot on the Boomers with tryouts on March 15-16 at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn. and on April 25 at Boomers Stadium in Schaumburg, Ill.

In the last two years, a total of four players have been signed to professional contracts out of these tryouts including Boomers All-Star MVP Outfielder and current Arizona Diamondbacks farmhand, Sean Mahley and two-year catcher Ty Nelson.

FRIDAY, APRIL 25 – BOOMERS STADIUM IN SCHAUMBURG, ILLINOIS

Position players report at 9 a.m.

Pitchers report at 11 a.m.

Cost: $50 

Registration will take place on the day of the tryout and the cost is $50 per player. Players must arrive in baseball attire and supply their own wooden bats, gloves and cleats, and catchers must provide their own gear. The Boomers will supply only batting helmets and baseballs. 

Upon arriving, players should enter through the First Base Gate for registration. Position player tryouts will be held first at 9 a.m. with pitchers to follow at 11 a.m. The Boomers will invite select players back for a second tryout as necessary.

Participants in both tryouts are vying to earn on a spot on the Boomers 34-man Spring Training Roster, which will be trimmed to a maximum of 24 players when the Boomers open the 2014 season in Schaumburg on Friday, May 23 at 6:30 p.m. against the Florence Freedom. Having both claimed Championships in their respective leagues in 2013, Boomers Manager Jamie Bennett will join his former boss, Gary SouthShore RailCats Manager Greg Tagert in the return to Cumberland for a tryout camp on March 16-17. This is the third straight year that the Boomers and RailCats, both owned by prominent Chicago attorney Pat Salvi and his wife Lindy, will be on the lookout for talent in Tennessee.

Registration will take place on the day of the tryout and the cost is $60 per player. This will be an open tryout for any player age 18 and older who is not under contract or currently playing collegiately. Players should wear proper baseball attire and will need to provide their own equipment, including wood bats and catchers gear. Position players will report at 9:30 a.m. and pitchers will report at 12:30 p.m.

The relationship between the two Managers goes back to 2002 when the southpaw Bennett first played for Tagert. After his playing career, Bennett served as Tagert's pitching coach for five years before joining the Boomers as the club's inaugural manager in Fall 2011.
