Pair of Rookie Infielders Agree To Terms with Boomers

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers and Manager of the Year Jamie Bennett agreed to terms with 2013 Chicago Cubs draft pick and Villanova University standout Tyler Sciacca and University of Mount Olive product Cameron Sherrer, it was announced today.

Sciacca, 23, was a 27th round selection by the Cubs in the 2013 Major League Entry Draft who excelled as a middle infielder at Villanova and in the prestigious summer collegiate Cape Cod Baseball League. In four years at Villanova, the Mesa, Ariz. native boasted an impressive .312/.396/.435 stat line in 184 college games with 45 doubles, 10 triples and 102 runs scored. Sciacca inked his deal with Schaumburg after helping Boomers Hitting Coach C.J. Thieleke and the Oregon Jacks capture the California Winter League Championship back in February.

Sherrer, 25, spent the past two seasons putting up imposing numbers in the Pecos League but retains his Rookie-1 Status based on Frontier League classification rules. In two seasons as a pro, Sherrer boasts a .315/.470/.455 slash line with seven doubles, three triples, four homers and 16 stolen bases.

In other Boomers News, 1B/DH Steve McQuail recently became the first former Boomer to appear in an MLB game with the Arizona Diamondbacks during Spring Training. The former Boomers slugger also collected the first MLB hit and run scored in his second appearance with the big league club on Sunday, March 16. McQuail, who is the Boomers all-time leader in homers with 40 bombs over the last two seasons, is currently listed on the roster for the Double-A Mobile BayBears in the Dbacks system.

With the additions of Sciacca and Sherrer, the Boomers officially have 22 players signed to contracts for the 2014 season. The latest additions will join outfielders Alexi Colon, Bobby Martin, Jordan Owen and Justin Vasquez; pitchers Gilbert BarraraJames Bierlein, Cal Bowling, Max Duval, Preston HatcherClark LabitanMatt Lamothe, Dexter Price, Erik Shannahan, Anthony Smith and Seth Webster; catchers Michael Valadez, Ty Nelson and Cody Coffman; and infielders Jordan Dean and Ryan Normoyle on what will be a maximum 34-man roster when Spring Training begins in late-April at Boomers Stadium in Schaumburg

INF TYLER SCIACCA

The 5-foot-10 infielder played for both the Harwich Mariners and the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in 2012 in the Cape Cod Baseball League, which is arguably the top summer collegiate league in the country. In 13 games with the Red Sox, Sciacca batted .400 with 12 hits and seven runs scored, and in 23 games with the Mariners, he collected 22 hits with three homers and 12 RBI.

Sciacca had a phenomenal junior season at Villanova in 2012 with a sparkling .359/.430/.500 line amassing 43 runs scored, 16 doubles and six triples in 55 games played and earning Second Team All-Big East Honors. An injury cost Sciacca what would have been his junior year in 2011, which allowed him to return for a fifth year in 2013. As a senior, Sciacca posted a line of .299/.396/.458 with 18 doubles and 36 RBI.

INF CAMERON SHERRER

Sherrer completed his college career at Division II University of Mount Olive where as a senior he appeared in 53 games with a .364/.444/.482 slash line to go along with nine doubles and 42 RBI. The shortstop scored 38 runs and racked up 22 walks against just 28 strikeouts with the Trojans. In two seasons at Scottsdale Community College as a member of the Fighting Artichokes Baseball Team, Sherrer appeared in 43 games collecting 29 hits and earning 13 walks.
