Defending Champion Boomers Set Opening Day Roster

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers presented by Wintrust Community Banks and Manager of the Year Jamie Bennett revealed the Opening Day Roster for the third season of Boomers Baseball in Schaumburg, complete with the addition Rays Prospect Ryan McChesney.

Sean Mahley and Mike Valadez, two players who have been Boomers since the beginning, headline a talented active roster as Schaumburg gets set to open the 2014 campaign on the road against the Lake Erie Crushers, the site of the Championship-clinching game in September. Mahley returns to complete his transition to pitcher after a stint in the Diamondbacks organization and Valadez, arguably the best defensive catcher in the league, is coming off his best offensive season as a pro in 2013 where he batted .286 in 66 games behind the dish.

McChesney, 24, opens the season as the other backstop on the Boomers roster after spending the past two seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays and Spring Training 2014 with the Evansville Otters. In 45 games with the Rays, McChesney owns a career stat line of .232/.374/.304 with six doubles, 12 RBI and 26 walks at the plate.

Both starters return on the right side of the Boomers infield with first baseman Brian McConkey looking to follow up an explosive 2013 playoff run where he batted .318 with a homer and six RBI during the Boomers six-game sweep to a title with a strong start to the new season and second baseman Jordan Dean, who will be in year two as a member of the Boomers. Dean, a former 15th round pick of the Detroit Tigers, batted .275 with six doubles and two triples in 52 games with Schaumburg in 2013.

The Boomers will usher in a new left side of the infield after losing franchise staples Frank Pfister to retirement and Gerard Hall to the Visalia Rawhide, Single-A Advanced in the Arizona Diamondbacks system. In the mix for shortstop and third base are the combination of former Rays prospect Ben Kline and Boomers first round selection in the Frontier League Tryout Camp Draft Mark Nelson who will both get the Opening Day nod in addition to rookie infielders Ryan Normoyle, Chicago Cubs 2013 draft pick Tyler Sciacca and Cameron Sherrer.

Manager Jamie Bennett lists only three outfielders on the Opening Day Roster, all returners from the 2013 Championship Roster. After a solid postseason run last season that saw the lefty draw six free passes against just one strikeout, Alexi Colon will occupy the leadoff spot for the 2014 edition of the Boomers with late-season acquisition Justin Vasquez slated to bat third in a very balanced Boomers attack. Bobby Martin brings speed to the lineup and looks to take off running after a strong Spring Training in 2014. The versatility of guys like Mahley, Nelson and Normoyle to play outfield gives the Schaumburg Manager options to rest the regulars throughout the season.

Schaumburg goes with right-hander Cal Bowling on the mound to start the season opener. The Ball State University product spent the past two seasons in the Chicago White Sox organization. Righty Charle Rosario, who brings seven seasons of professional experience with him to Schaumburg including two with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs in the Red Sox organization, gets the ball for the Boomers in Game Two of the season and St. Charles native Danny Jimenez closes out the opening series against Lake Erie. Game four of the season is set for Tuesday, May 20 at Southern Illinois and scintillating side-armer Seth Webster takes the bump for the Boomers with Robert Morris University standout Rey Rodriguez rounding out the rotation.

The Boomers bullpen figures to be a strength for Schaumburg again in 2014 with Championship veterans Mahley, Dexter Price, Clark Labitan and James Bierlein joined by a group of talented newcomers in Anthony Smith, Heith Hatfield and former Chicago Cubs fourth round pick Hunter Ackerman.
