RECAP: Boomers Pitch to a Doubleheader Sweep

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, received a pair of strong pitching performances to sweep the Gateway Grizzlies in a doubleheader on Wednesday.
 
Lefty Rey Rodriguez allowed just two hits in the first contest, working six innings and allowing one run in a 6-1 decision to win for the first time as a professional. Rodriguez struck out five in the game, including fanning the side in order in the fourth. Heith Hatfield struck out the side in the seventh. Schaumburg built an early lead in the opener and did not look back, taking advantage of eight walks and two hit batters. Denver Chavez was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first with the bases loaded to open the scoring. Four different individuals posted hits including a second inning RBI double from Justin Vasquez and a fifth inning RBI single from Mark Nelson.
 
Game two featured the second complete game shutout in franchise history as Cal Bowling pitched the Boomers to a 2-0 win. Bowling struck out a season high eight in becoming the first pitcher to earn two victories this season, scattering three hits in the decision. Sean Mahley drove home both runs in the contest, collecting an RBI groundout in the first and an RBI single in the sixth to provide insurance. Five individuals posted hits in game two as eight players posted at least one hit during the doubleheader.
 
The series and homestand finale comes on Thursday night with a special 8:00 p.m. start for 21 and Over Night. Tickets are available and the game can be heard live on AM 1410 WRMN with the Voice of the Boomers and 2013 Frontier League Broadcaster of the Year, Tim Calderwood.

RHP Anthony Smith (0-0, 0.00) starts for the Boomers, who have won three consecutive series and are over the .500 mark for the first time this season.
