RECAP: Big Inning Stops Boomers in Homestand Finale

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, concluded the first homestand of the season with a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the Gateway Grizzlies on 21&Over Night at Boomers Stadium.

Both teams used big innings in the contest. The Boomers plated three runs in the second to grab a 3-0 lead. Mark Nelson drove home Ty Nelson with an RBI single, the second of three straight in the inning. Jordan Dean followed with a two-run single.

Gateway immediately answered with five runs in the top of the third to chase starter Anthony Smith. Smith allowed just two earned runs in three innings but suffered the loss. The Schaumburg pitching staff recorded a season high 13 strikeouts in the game. Dean led a 10-hit attack with three hits and a pair of RBIs. Justin Vasquez and Mark Nelson tallied two apiece.

The Boomers have won three consecutive series and hit the road for three contests with the River City Rascals in suburban St. Louis on Friday night. LHP Danny Jimenez (1-0, 2.25) takes the ball in the opener for Schaumburg against RHP Ray Hanson (1-0, 0.96) in a 7:05 p.m. contest.
