RECAP: Zombies Devour Miners

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, changed their identity to the Zombies for one night only and stopped a nine-game win streak for the Southern Illinois Miners with a 7-3 decision on Field of Screams Night Saturday.

Southern Illinois led 3-1 in the contest before the Zombies erupted for four runs in the fifth to take the lead. Jordan Dean notched an RBI single top claw the Zombies within 3-2. Ty Nelson tallied a two-run single to put the Zombies ahead for good at 4-3. Brian McConkey also added an RBI single in the inning. Mark Nelson and Ty Nelson singled home runs in the sixth to account for the final total. Ty Nelson notched three hits and three RBIs in the game. Cal Bowling earned the win, working five innings on the mound. Five relievers combined to shut the door.

The series concludes on Sunday with the rubber game. RHP Anthony Smith (1-1, 4.05) starts for the Boomers in the 1:00 p.m. affair with RHP Miguel Ramirez (2-1, 4.30) on the flip side for Southern Illinois.
