RECAP: Vasquez Hits for the Cycle as Boomers Erupt for Win

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, improved to 9-3 at home with an impressive offensive display in a 14-3 win over the Southern Illinois Miners on Sunday afternoon behind the first cycle in team history from Justin Vasquez.

With the game even at 1-1, Vasquez belted a two-run homer in the fifth to hand Schaumburg the lead for good. Mark Nelson added an RBI double in the frame. Southern Illinois notched a pair of unearned runs in the top of the sixth to fight within 4-3, but the offense left no doubt with six runs in the sixth. Vasquez, Jordan DeanMark NelsonTyler Sciacca, and Cameron Sherrer all drove home runs during the frame with singles.

Vasquez doubled in the seventh and completed the cycle in the eighth with an RBI triple. The left-handed hitter finished the game 4-for-5 with four RBIs and became the first Frontier League player to hit for the cycle this season. The last cycle in the league came on September 4, 2013.

Schaumburg plated at least two runs in the final four visits to the plate, establishing single season highs in runs, hits, and runs in an inning. The 18 hits matched a team record and came from seven individuals with at least three from four players. The run support was more than enough for Anthony Smith, who allowed just a single earned run in six innings of work to earn the win. Smith walked one and struck out four.

Over the .500 mark for the second time this season, the Boomers (11-10) have won consecutive series and captured the season series from Southern Illinois for the first time in team history. Schaumburg enjoys a pair of off days before a Wednesday doubleheader against the East Division leading Washington Wild Things. LHP Rey Rodriguez (1-1, 2.84) and RHP Seth Webster (1-2, 3.80). The contest can be heard live on AM 1410 WRMN with the Voice of the Boomers and 2013 Frontier League Broadcaster of the Year, Tim Calderwood.
