RECAP: Boomers Steal a Pair of Extra-Inning Wins

WASHINGTON, Pa. — The 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, recorded a pair of extra-inning victories to steal a series win over the top team in the Frontier League, the Washington Wild Things.

The first contest was a continuation of Wednesday’s first game in which Seth Webster logged four no-hit innings. Hunter Ackerman came on in place of Webster Thursday and worked three more hitless frames, retiring the first seven batters before a walk. Washington finally collected a hit with one out in the eighth. The only run of the game came in the ninth inning when Justin Vasquez connected on his second homer of the season leading off the frame.

Heith Hatfield earned the win in relief with Dexter Price shutting the door for his fifth save. Tyler Sciacca and Bobby Martin notched two hits each in the victory.

Schaumburg recorded a sweep by picking up a 4-3 eight-inning decision in the second contest. Trailing 1-0, the Boomers scored a pair of runs in the third to open a 2-1 edge. Sean Mahley notched an RBI triple and Sciacca an RBI double. The lead extended to 3-1 with another Sciacca RBI in the fourth. Washington tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The game remained even until the eighth when the Boomers won without a hit. Mark Nelson drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on an error, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Michael ValadezJames Bierlein earned the win in relief with Price nailing down his second save in as many contests. Sciacca finished with three hits.

The Boomers (13-11) handed Washington just their second series loss of the year.
