RECAP: Record Boomers Crowd Watches Fourth Shutout

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — With the largest paid attendance in their three-year history on hand, the 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, rewarded the home faithful with a 3-0 shutout of the first-place River City Rascals Wednesday at Boomers Stadium.

The crowd of 7,614 watched as the Boomers plated single runs in the fourth, fifth, and eighth to provide enough support for three pitchers. Mark Nelson opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single to drive home Justin Vasquez. Bobby Martin plated a run in the fifth with a fielder’s choice, and Tyler Sciacca capped the scoring with an RBI double in the eighth.

Eddie Cody, signed before the game, worked 3.2 scoreless frames in his professional debut, allowing just four hits. Hunter Ackerman tossed 4.1 blank frames in the longest outing of the season by a reliever to earn the win, striking out three in the process. Clark Labitan closed out the victory by facing the minimum in the ninth to finish the league best fourth shutout of the season. Sciacca and Michael Valadez finished with two hits each for the Boomers.

The Boomers (16-13) conclude the series with the rubber match at 6:30 p.m. on a Thirsty Thursday and Backwards Night. LHP Danny Jimenez (1-1, 5.19) pitches for Schaumburg opposite RHP Trey Lambert (0-0, 0.00), who will make his pro debut. The contest can be heard live on AM 1410 WRMN with the Voice of the Boomers and 2013 Frontier League Broadcaster of the Year, Tim Calderwood.
