RECAP: Boomers Race Past ThunderBolts

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, welcomed back a familiar face and scored a 13-2 rout of the Windy City ThunderBolts in the opener of a series on Friday night.

Gerard Hall signed a contract before the contest, returning for a third season and posted a bunt single in the top of the first before scoring the first run on a double from Justin Vasquez, who finished with three hits.

The Boomers, 12-4 at home, were facing former big leaguer Josh Spence, who made 51 appearances with the Padres in 2011 and 2012, and tacked on two more against him in the first. Ty Nelson and Bobby Martin notched RBI singles. Windy City clawed within 3-2 with single runs in the second and third, but three more runs in the bottom of the third chased Spence as Nelson, Michael Valadez, and Alexi Colon drove home runs.

Nelson finished with three hits and a pair of RBIs in the game. Schaumburg added three in the sixth and fourth in the eighth, producing 14 hits from eight different individuals. Cal Bowling earned the win by working six innings on the mound, allowing two runs on four hits.

Game Two of the series is on Saturday as part of Glow in the Park. LHP Hunter Ackerman (1-0, 2.66) makes a spot start for the Boomers in the 6:00 p.m. affair which features a glow in the dark hat giveaway courtesy of Wintrust Community Banks. Windy City counters with RHP Daniel Cropper (2-4, 7.11). The contest can be heard live on AM 1410 WRMN with the Voice of the Boomers and 2013 Frontier League Broadcaster of the Year, Tim Calderwood.
