RECAP: Boomers Edged in Extras

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, could not stave off the Gateway Grizzlies in a 4-3 10-inning defeat on Tuesday.

Gateway jumped in front in the top of the first. Schaumburg tied the game with an unearned tally in the top of the second. The game remained a pitchers duel throughout. Gateway grabbed a 2-1 lead on a squeeze play in the seventh. Alexi Colon nailed a two-run homer in the eighth to give Schaumburg a momentary 3-2 edge. The host Grizzlies were even the score in the bottom of the ninth and won the contest on a bang-bang play on a two out infield single. Seth Webster allowed just two runs in 6.1 innings, taking a no decision. Justin Vasquez collected a pair of hits for the Boomers.

The defeat halted a season best five game win streak for the Boomers (20-14). Game two of the series takes place at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday with LHP Danny Jimenez (2-1, 4.35) pitching for Schaumburg. Gateway will counter with RHP Tucker Jensen (4-1, 3.95). The contest can be heard live on AM 1410 WRMN with the Voice of the Boomers and 2013 Frontier League Broadcaster of the Year, Tim Calderwood.
