RECAP: Gateway Walks Past Boomers

SAUGET, Ill. — The 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, suffered a 7-3 defeat at the hands of the Gateway Grizzlies on Wednesday night.

The Grizzlies raged to a 4-0 lead, scoring a run in the first and adding three in the second, two unearned, against Schaumburg starter Danny Jimenez. Jimenez settled down, working through six innings. The lefty struck out a season best nine, matching the most by a starter this year. Jimenez suffered the hard luck loss, issuing just one walk. Schaumburg pulled within 4-2 in the third after a leadoff single from Michael Valadez and a double from Sean Mahley. Gateway pulled away with three in the seventh on five walks. Gerard Hall doubled twice in the game as the Boomers were limited to just five hits.

The defeat was the first series loss for the Boomers (20-15) in the month of June, stopping a string of six consecutive series victories. The series finale takes place on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Cal Bowling (4-3, 3.75) will start for the Boomers against RHP Ja’Vaun West (4-1, 4.03). The contest can be heard live on AM 1410 WRMN with the Voice of the Boomers and 2013 Frontier League Broadcaster of the Year, Tim Calderwood.
