RECAP: Evansville Drops Boomers in Extras

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, failed to hold three different leads as the Evansville Otters rallied to a 9-8 decision in 10 innings.

Spot starter Hunter Ackerman stole the show early for the Boomers. Ackerman retired the first nine batters of the game and recorded five consecutive strikeouts at one point. Ackerman carried a no-hitter into the sixth as Schaumburg held a 3-0 lead. The no-hitter ended on a two-run homer in the sixth. Evansville added two in the seventh to grab a 4-3 lead. Ackerman worked six innings and struck out seven while allowing just two runs on two hits.

Bobby Martin drilled a three-run homer in the eighth, his second homer of the contest, to hand Schaumburg a momentary 6-4 advantage. The Otters evened the game with two in the ninth to force extras. The Boomers plated a pair in the eighth to snatch an 8-6 lead. The go ahead run crossed on a sacrifice fly from Alexi Colon. Evansville responded in the bottom of the frame, plating three to win the contest on a two out single. Martin finished with three hits, three runs scored, and four RBIs for the Boomers.
