RECAP: Huge First Powers Boomers

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, scored eight runs in the top of the first inning to erase a five game losing streak with a 10-1 win over the Evansville Otters on Sunday.

The Boomers sent 13 men to the plate in the first inning and tallied just three hits but took advantage of five walks, an error, and a hit batter to roar to the advantage. Jordan Dean capped the scoring with the lone hit that produced a run in the frame, a two-run double in his second at bat of the inning. Justin Vasquez opened the scoring with an RBI walk. Ty Nelson, Bobby Martin, Brian McConkey, and Jared Martin also drove home runs in the inning. Ty Nelson connected on his first professional homer in the ninth to finish the scoring. Dean, Mark Nelson, and Ty Nelson picked up two hits apiece.

Starting pitcher Seth Webster did the rest on the mound. Webster carried a shutout into the ninth. The second year Boomer recorded 12 consecutive outs from the second through the sixth and did not allow more than one runner to reach until the eighth. Webster struck out five and allowed just an unearned run in the ninth while improving to 3-2 on the season.

Schaumburg is back at home on Tuesday to begin a six game stretch through the Fourth of July weekend. The Boomers (21-18) own one of the best home records in the league. LHP Danny Jimenez (2-2, 4.14) will start the opener with the Joliet Slammers, who have not announced a starter for the 6:30 p.m. game. The contest can be heard live on AM 1410 WRMN with the Voice of the Boomers and 2013 Frontier League Broadcaster of the Year, Tim Calderwood.
