RECAP: Boomers Claim Wild Win

O’FALLON, Mo. — The 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, held on for a 7-6 win over the River City Rascals in the opener of a three game series on Tuesday night.

Leading 2-0 following an RBI single from Brian McConkey and a Mark Nelson RBI double, the Boomers watched as River City used a big inning to grab a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the third. Schaumburg responded with a big inning as well in the fifth to take the lead. Frontier League All-Star Justin Vasquez opened the scoring in the frame with a two run homer. Mark Nelson brought the Boomers within a run on an RBI single. McConkey handed Schaumburg the lead after much debate with a two run homer down the line in right. The ball was initially ruled foul before and argument and an umpire’s conference overturned the call for McConkey’s second homer in as many games, leading to a pair of River City ejections.

Anthony Smith collected the win, working three innings in relief of Seth Webster. Dexter Price worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 11th save. McConkey finished with two hits and three RBIs while Mark Nelson logged three hits and a pair of RBIs. Vasquez also finished with two hits. The Rascals were forced to use pitchers as position players early in the game due to injury.

Schaumburg (26-19) has won five consecutive contests to match a season high. The Boomers will look to equal a franchise record in the middle game of the series with RHP Cal Bowling (5-4, 3.91) on the hill against RHP Tommy Mendoza (2-1, 0.71). The contest can be heard live on AM 1410 WRMN with the Voice of the Boomers and 2013 Frontier League Broadcaster of the Year, Tim Calderwood.
