RECAP: Boomers Slam Greys 18-6

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.  — The 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, set or equaled handfuls of team records in an 18-6 rout of the Frontier Greys to sweep the series and move into a first place tie on Sunday afternoon.

Mark Nelson opened the scoring with a grand slam off the foul pole in right as part of a six-run third inning. The homer marked the third of the season for Nelson and was the fourth grand slam for the Boomers. The blast opened the gates for Schaumburg, who matched a team record by scoring 18 runs for the third time this season.

The Boomers received contributions from all nine members of the lineup in setting a team mark for hits in a game with 20.Gerard Hall tallied five hits with a homer and a triple to equal the single game franchise mark. Hall also drove home six to equal a standard established earlier this year by Michael Valadez. Nelson finished with three hits and five RBIs. All nine members of the lineup posted at least one hit with seven registering more than one, scoring at least one run and six driving home a run. Mark Nelson and Ty Nelson scored four runs to also tie the franchise mark.

Eddie Cody benefitted from the run support, working six innings to improve to 6-1 on the season. Cody struck out seven in the contest. Schaumburg set a single season record for runs scored, crossing the mark of 473 from 2012. The Boomers scored 37 runs in the series, finishing 6-0 against the Greys this year.

Schaumburg (53-34) has won five straight and is now tied for first in the West Division following a River City loss at Lake Erie. The Boomers now own a magic number of five with nine games remaining to clinch a second consecutive playoff appearance. The homestand continues on Tuesday night when the Rockford Aviators visit. RHP Seth Webster (6-4, 3.10) will start in the 6:30 p.m. contest on a Kids Eat Free Tuesday while Rockford sends RHP Kyle Hassna (2-3, 2.91).

The contest can be heard live on AM 1410 WRMN with the Voice of the Boomers and 2013 Frontier League Broadcaster of the Year, Tim Calderwood. Reserve your piece of the fun at Boomers Stadium this season by calling 847.461.3695 or visiting www.boomersbaseball.com.
